CONCEPT: For my scenic design class in March 2022, we were tasked with generating a concert design based on an album. I was given the album 'Jubilee' by Japanese Breakfast. Through my research, I learned about the singer of the band - Michelle Zauner. This album comes as a celebration of her finally reconciling with her culture after her mother's death. It is a celebration of how far she has come. After her mother dies, Zauner feels like she has lost touch with her Korean background and so rediscovers it through food (persimmons being one of them). The fruit is also found on the album cover. Inspired by its shape, celebratory vibrantness, and spiritual meaning of transformation, I decided to make it an integral part of my scenic design. It acted as not only a border surrounding the stage and into the audience but also a light that could pulsate throughout the space. The latter encompasses the audience in Zauner's story. There is also a circular projection screen mirroring its shape. In the beginning, there could be a persimmon projected (Image 1) and later can transform into a slideshow of Zauner and her mom (Image 3). It would all take us on a journey of transformation and closure.
